Drill Reaches Miners in Chile, but Risks Remain New york Times ALEXEI BARRIONUEVO and CHRISTINE HAUSER

The headline of the story is really important because it describes the point of the article instead of restating what the audience already knows through other nes. It is a heads up that this is brand new news. Two months ago a gold and copper mine collapsed on its workers and this weekend the last steps to their rescue have been completed. This article is about the miners in Chile just hours from their complete rescue. In order to come back to the surface the rescuers had to drill a hole with precaution so that things wouldnt get any worse. The article is news worthy because it tells about the end of an accident that has been on the news for a long time. The lead of the article is a what lead which is the drill reached the trapped miners. Since the accident occured two months ago it was important for the article two summarize everything that happened between then and now. The main focus of the article was to detail the complications and risks that the rescue has. Since the article was done by two people, one writer in Chile and another in New York, the sources include the family members of the trapped miners and the people in charge of the mine. These sources are good because they are the ones directly related and involved but the article would have been better if they had as a source NASA officials especially since they played an important role in the rescue. NASA provided their own advice to build the capsule that will transport the miners back up to the surface. The article did a good job in describing the rescue process and the technology. Basically they provided the how for the what. I chose this article because I am familiar with the news about the Chilean miners and I thought that since it was about the actual and final steps to the rescue, it was important.

  1. I agree with you that the sources the article used are good and efficient because it includes a variety of perspectives. I think it is always good to have a point of view from someone who is more directly connected to the situation. In this case, the family members of the trapped miners are good sources because they provide good insight on what happened.
