News/Opinion idea - Grading teachers

There is lots of controversy right now about the Department of Education's plan to release grades for each of its teachers (4th-8th grades only) and rank them based on their effectiveness. This could be a news story - what do teachers think about this? What about students and administrators? Should teachers be graded?

This could easily be an opinion article too - what do you think, should teachers be given a letter grade, much like how you are in class? Why?

Here is some articles about this:
Barbara Martinez's article in the WSJ
More about this from Bloomburg News

Yet another article idea...

News/Features: Ms. Birchard and Ms. K created a community service club. Word is they have quite a few members from all grades and have already been participating in several events, including a breast cancer walk. See them for more info.

Could be a good Sports story... what do coaches, student atheletes and even Ms. Nightengale think of this?

Story idea....

Here's a cool idea for someone to do a story one (maybe features or even news?): Names
You could interview people about their names and what they mean and how they were named. Perhaps a chart of common and unusual names?

Council Sets Abortion Fight

By Michael Howard Saul
October 15, 2010
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703794104575546620908818644.html?mod=WSJ_NY_News_LEFTTopStories

New Bill Would Set Strict Disclosure Requirements for Crisis-Pregnancy Centers
This article is about the city council making a new legislation that emergency centers for abortion has to state what they provide and what they can offer instead of tricking the women. On less a medical provider is onsite then the information has to be disclosed immediately to the women. Because of this new bill, the centers are required to hang posters and signs informing their clients. Many abortion centers are saying that the law violates freedom of speech telling the clinics what not to say and basically having a control over them. Christine Quinn who supports the legislation says that it only want the truth in advertisement. Ms. Lapin from Manhattan stated that these women are scared and willing to listen to what ever they are being told and these folks in anti choice centers misleading the is not right. Mr. Slattory, someone who doesn’t agree with the bill is saying how many New York City businesses are told that they should hang signs up about what they offer. Under the bill, fines for violations range from $200 to $2,500. Centers with three or more violations within two years could be shuttered for a maximum of five days. The bill also wants the centers to keep their clients information quiet and not share it with others.
The lead of the story was actually pretty good allowing one to get captured by the article. The head line of the article was also written in proper mood. This is important because NYC has a lot of these centers around so it should be able to manage it self well and provide clients with the proper help. In addition, many students from our school gets pregnant, what if they were to end up in one of these places.

Wizards Look to a Rookie for Poise

By Howard Beck

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/18/sports/basketball/18wizards.html?_r=1&ref=basketball

I think this headline goes well with the base of the story. It basically describes how young rookie john wall is becoming the go to guy instead of the one face of the Wizards Gilbert Arenas. Wall is now who is depended upon and is looked at to get the team out of a jam. The lead was writen as a who lead. It was written basically telling how Gilbert is bocoming just a speaker on the Washington Wizards. not really anything more then just a face attached to the franchise. Sources that were used were the coaches of both the wizards and the knicks. Both coaches gave wall praise on what a great job he's doing and how he compliments the league. Another source that I feel can have been used is Walls opinion on the actions of he teammate  and what he feels the older leader should do in order to benifite the team so they all can prosper. Something else that could have been added was Arenas's feelings on the young players praise. This is news worthy because it expresses feelings about once great players in the NBA and new rising ones.

The reason that I chose this article is because I also feel the wall is an extrodinary player. I think that he is getting the recognition that he desurves but i also feel that Arenas made the wizards name what it has grown to be known as. He played a big role in getting the team to where it has been and for the team and media to try to push him to the side isnt correct. I think they should take heed and think about the situation as a whole and pay homage to Gilbert and give him thanks even though he has done a little wrong.

No Rest for a Long-Distance Runner by ROBIN FINN

I think that the headline is good because it doesn’t exactly tell the reader what the story is truly about. it give us clues on what we are prepared to read. the headline works well with the overall message because the story is about a lady name Marry Wittenberg who used to run marathons but cant anymore because of her knees, but she resists to take a rest from running so she just runs along with other marathon runners.
the lead was written nice simple and short, it got to the point where readers already knew what the story was going to be about.the sources in the article were Ms. Wittenberg, 48, lives on the Upper East Side with her husband, Derek, a banker, and their two sons, Alex, 9, and Cary, 8. the story could have contained other sources such as other runner she ran with, and maybe a coach who might have trained her, because maybe they might wanted to say something that could have benefited her story. this story could have used more background history on her and more information on her kids to see if they would like to pursue in their mother foot steps in becoming a marathon runner . this story is newsworthy because not every female who has two kids will keep running as a hobby after their most valuable prize which their knee has given up on them. some women would have took up a hobby that involves sitting.

i selected this article because i use to run and i realized how far people have gotten with running. people do it for reason good ones at that such as the breast cancer walk, aids walk and domestic violence walk.

Hate Crimes on Gays!

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/09/nyregion/09bias.html?pagewanted=2&ref=todayspaper

This article is about recent attacks that have been placed on a 30-Year old man because of his sexuality. The 30-Year old man was attacked by Latin King gang memebers. The headline of this story is very mysterious and eye catching. It caught my attention because the headline makes the story seems very interesting. The headline works with the story because it gives the readers a taste and sneak peak of what they are about to read. It tells what the story is going to be about without actually giving away the juicy details. This lead was a WHAT lead. It stated what happened the night of the crime scene. I love this lead alot because it wasn't like most leads that i've read before. It was very suspenseful and unoridinary. It made me curious about the rest of the story. It was very effective in the way that it described what exactly took place and what the main idea of the story was going to be about. The sources in the article were the Police Officers, Christine C. Quinn (the Council Speaker), Raymond W. Kelly(Police Commissioner), and the Neighbors. Some otherr sources that should have been included in the article are the actuals victims of the hae crime. I think it is very important that the victims have a say in what happened, and how this terrible experience changed their lives. The readers dont hear from the victims who suffered from this near death experience. All they hear about is what happpened and thats it. Something else that needs to be in this article might be how the family members of the victims felt about the events that took place. Also how does the community feel since this all happened in the Bronx, right here in New York City. If some of these things were included in the story it would make the story seem more humble than blunt. However, i believe that this article is ver news worthy. This is because it keeps the readers up to date with whats happening in the community. Also it's letting the public aware of the terrible things gays are being faced with just because they are different.

I chose to write about this article because hate crimes on gays are occurring more and more in the community and nothing is done to stop it or prevent it from happening. I think it so sad that Gays are being punished. Honestly, their sexuality had nothing to do with everyone else. They are just trying to live a happy life yet society always judges them and treats them as outcasts

U.S Will Enforce Marijuana Laws, State Vote Aside

This article is about California's Propostition 19 which is basically
the law they will pass if majority of population votes yes. According to the article
even if the law is passed, the federal government plans on continuing to enforce
the law.

I believe the lead is good for the story. Not only does it sum up
the entire story in two sentences but it makes readers want to
read. The meer mention of marijuana and the legalization is
enough human interest to make people want to read about it.

In the article the governor of California Arnold S., the attorney general,
The Los Angeles County Sheriff, and some political consultants. I think
these sources were necessities while writing this story. They are main parts
of the laws and the police officers who deal with those who are arrested
because of marijuana. I think they could add some of the people of California.
By doing this, I think it makes it more human interest and less politics.
People who read the story need to know how they would be effected and by adding
people opinions they are able to relate.

I think in the article they should talk about how if California how it will cause
conflict in other states being that some people from other states may also want
the law to be passed.

Human Interest, Proximity and Prominence were used in the story. The conflict between
whether marijuana should be passed or not shows emotion between the people
who believe it should and those who do not. Proximity because people want to hear about it right now. Prominence because marijuana is a popular drug that people hear about.

I chose to read and write about this article because I feel like in my generation
marijuana has become widely popular. The teens can not understand how something
like cigarettes cause lung cancer and are sold but the government is anti-marijuana.
I am interested in how the government plans on justifying why and what is this the difference.

News Friday 10/17/10

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/11/education/11scores.html?ref=education

“On New York School Tests, Warning Signs Ignored” by Jennifer Medina. New York Times.

I think that the headline is good because it doesn’t exactly tell the reader what the story is truly about, but it gives the reader enough facts to keep the reader interested on the content of the story. The headline works well with the overall message of the story because the story is about the flaws with the New York State exams given in the fourth and eighth grades. The ‘warnings’ the headline refers to are the flaws that were made in the construction of the exams. For example, the New York State exams are very predictable. Each year, many of the questions on the exams are basically the same and repetitive. Maybe a number or two is changed on the math exam, but the question is essentially the same. Also, each year, almost immediately after the exams are taken, the exams are publicized. Because of this, the exams are predictable, and teachers know exactly what to teach their students. The problem that arises with predictable tests is that it is hard to tell if the students are really learning, or if they are just being taught only what is on the test. The headline underscores the issue of flaws in the NY state exams. Then the article talks about the state’s decision to make the tests harder because these flaws, or ‘warning signs,’ were ignored.

The lead is a how lead because it tells the reader how the problems and flaws of the state exams caused the state exams to be made harder. In a way, I think the lead is good, but is a bit confusing since it doesn’t directly tell the reader what the story is about. I was able to understand how the lead connected to the main theme of the story only after I read the entire article. The article includes many sources related to New York education. For instance, some sources are teachers, and another source is the chief spokesman of the NY Board of Education in the 1900s and 2000. The author could have used principals of NY schools as a source because, now that the exams will be used to see which teachers and principals will get bonuses, the scores of New York students will have a more direct impact on principals.

Something that I think could be in the article is examples of which teachers/students/principals have already experienced the effects of the new decisions. Proximity and consequence are the news determinants in the article, especially for students in New York and people involved with New York education. I chose this article because this is something happening in the state that I live in (proximity). I also chose this article because it will influence students in New York taking the state exams (consequence).

No More Legal Marijuana

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/16/us/16pot.html?ref=us

U.S. Will Enforce Marijuana Laws, State Vote Aside

This article was about the Marijuana laws in California. The US government is trying to enforce laws that will deem marijuana illegal in the state of California, despite the arguments made by the people. This is a change that will affect a lot of people medically and socially. This change will also change history because marijuana has been legal in California ever since 1996 and it has been celebrated since the 1960's.
I think the headline in this story is great. I think this headline will catch the attention of a lot of readers. Marijuana is a very popular subject to many different audiences so I am sure a lot of people will be drawn to this article because of that reason. This article uses a what lead because it starts off with what the government plans to do with the marijuana laws in the state of California. This article used a lot of political sources. It also included a quote from a sheriff, but I think this article is missing the most important sources. I think it should have included the people of California that will be affected the most by this new marijuana law. Those sources would have made the article much more interesting to read and easy for the readers to relate. I think this article uses the prominence determinant. I think it used this because Marijuana is a very popular subject. This article also used human interest because a lot of people, believe it or not, are interested in this subject.
I chose to write about this article because it caught my attention. I found it strange that California, which is pretty much known for its legalized marijuana, is about to lose that privilege. I also found it strange that it took so long for the government to make this decision in the first place. Lastly I chose this article because I believe this article would be of interest to a lot of people, like it was of interest to me.

Being Gay is Now a Problem

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/16/nyregion/16gays.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=gay%20bronx&st=cse

Openly Gay in the Bronx, but Constantly on Guard

The New York Times

Sam Dolnick

I think the headline is very straight forward and sums up the story in a couple of words. It works very well with the story because the whole story is about the recent attacks on three men in the Bronx for being gay and gay people having to be cautious of being openly gay on the Bronx. The lead was very well written because it posts up a scenario that the reader could follow but still leaves the reader on a hanger to make up their own conclusions but explains it in the rest of the story.

The sources in the story were Keith Mitchell who lives in the Bronx and is openly gay, Charles Rice Gonzalez a writer and gay activists, State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., and Eliza Byard an executive director of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network. This story also contained many different quotes from people who live in the neighborhood where the three men were tortured for being gay. The story contained a lot of statistics which was very helpful because it gave the reader a better understanding of the situation with LGBT communities in NYC. The story could have used more quotes from other openly gay men who live in the same neighborhood as Keith Mitchell and someone from the police department to shed some light on how the case of the three tortured men could affect other openly gay men in the city.

The story could have used more quotes from different sources like other openly gay men or people who sympathize with other gay men. The story was very long but it was very informative but I think it could have been shorter because it seemed like there was too much packed into one story.

The story uses the news determinants timeliness, proximity and human interest. Everyone is interested in what’s going on in the Bronx with the men who were arrested for torturing three openly gay men which makes it a story people want updates on. This new controversy with openly gay men is going on in the Bronx and a lot of readers either live in the Bronx or close to it. This story serves to shed some light on issues going on in different communities which trigger different emotions.

I chose this article because I am very passionate about LGBT issues because I feel that everyone has a right to be who they are and not have to look over their shoulders wondering if something is going to happen. I thought it was also interesting that something so horrible is going on so close to my home, if it can happen in the Bronx it can happen anywhere. This article showed me how serious the situation is with openly gay people and society not wanting them to embrace them.

Eye on China, House Votes for Greater Tariff

Powers
By David E Sanger

This past week the house of representatives has past a tariff on Chinese goods in retaliation to Beijing not lowering there value in currency In order for it can be cheaper for America to export the items. The bills vote went as recorded 348 to 79 most of favor of it and though the votes were clearly in favor of it the likely hood of it becoming a law is very slim seeing that the senate is not in favor of it. Also the treasury stated that the avoiding of a trade off war will not be a smart idea seeing that this could lead in china fully blocking there goods from America
I think the headline is great I feel it gets straight to the point and lays the subject flat out for the reader with House votes for greater tariffs it doesn’t leave the reader in the mist. The lead is who/what lead because though it states that the house of representatives are the ones responsible for the tariffs it also includes the fact of what their approving which is the tariffs. It also has a drawn in effect on the reader because it not only describes what is happing but also who is doing it. The story had many sources from president Obama who was in favor of the rule along with house speaker Nancy Pelosi. They also had Chinese prime minister Wen Jiabao who met with Obama to discuss the issue. Though the sources were reliable and were strong I still think it needed a store owner’s opinion to see how this would affect the sales of his products. And to accommodate to the source a graphical chart that shows how the deficit will add on to the recession we are facing now.

Court Weighs Limits on Speech

By: Jess Barvin
Wall Street Journal
October 7, 2010http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703735804575536100092251276.html?KEYWORDS=Court+Weighs+Limits+on+Speech

This article is speaking about how the father of a Marine can sue the Westboro Bapstist Church for violation of privacy. The father claims that the religious group had a vulgar funeral for his son and for crude online attack. Mr. Snyder won five million dollar and a federal court threw out the ruling saying that the Church's speech was protected by the first amendment. Justice Ruth Bader stated the church's behavior was unjutifiable because their was other ways of sending their message across. Margie Phelps who is a lawyer and daughter of the leader of the Westboro Church says that Mr. Snyder invited a public dialogue with the church by commenting about a post about his son. Sean Simmon who is representing Mr. Snyder says that there should be a line drawn against public figures and private individuals who make insults.

The headline of the story did catch my attention because there have always been a problem with the law about when the first amendment rights should be limited. The Westboro Church should have not insulted the Mr. Snyder's son especially if it was about about his funeral. The story was news worthy because this can be anyone saying their opinion and then all of a sudden it is a law suit. The sources in the articluded the father, the church, the daugther of the leader of the church. Most importanty it included the justices from the supreme court and Mr. Snyder's lawyer. The article might have needed to include a little more about Mr. Snyder's son. I wanted to know more about him. I selected this article because it was appealing and it was about a law. Usually issues affect certain types of people but a law affect everyone.

Apple Has Plans To Offer Verizon On Iphone

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/09/technology/09phone.html?src=me&ref=general
Miguel. Heft

This article talks how the Apple Company has future plans of merging with the Verizon Wireless Network in 2011. The headline was very advertising. It reminded me of a commercial or an ad in the newspaper. It served its purpose of grabbing the readers attention. It works with the story because it draws the readers in and informs them about what is occurring. The lead was very dull and boring. This was a what lead. It gave the readers information and that was it. It wasnt very effective at all. It only stated facts that were very plain. Luckily I wanted to know more about this new invention so I continued reading to find out as much as I can. The sources used in the article were Steven P. Jobs(Apple's Chief Executive), Mr.Sacconaghi, Charles Wolf, and Tony Melone. Some other sources that could've been used might be more Verizon and Apple representative because it seemed to me as though they had no say in this agreement. I've heard no remarks, words, or comments from either comapny pertaining to the merging of Verizon and Apple. It would be more interesting if the readers heard what each company had to say about why they decided to make such a drastic change. Something else that could've been used in the article was feedback from the customers and how they feel towards the idea of verison being available on the new Iphone4. This would spice up the story and give it some spark that way it wouldnt seem as boring. The readers will want to read it if people just like them have a say in this new idea. I think that this article is newsworthy because it is up to date with our time. Nowadays everyone owns an Apple product, whether its the Ipod, The Apple Computer, or the Iphone. This type of news is important because it informs the readers about something good they want to hear.

I chose to write this article because I find it very exciting that apple and verizon are finally merging. I like apple very much but I currently have Verizon servies. I always wanted to hsve both and it's good to know that now I finally have that option.

NEWS FRIDAY- Drill Reaches Miners in Chile, but Risks Remain

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/10/world/americas/10chile.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaperBy

Drill Reaches Miners in Chile, but Risks Remain New york Times ALEXEI BARRIONUEVO and CHRISTINE HAUSER

The headline of the story is really important because it describes the point of the article instead of restating what the audience already knows through other nes. It is a heads up that this is brand new news. Two months ago a gold and copper mine collapsed on its workers and this weekend the last steps to their rescue have been completed. This article is about the miners in Chile just hours from their complete rescue. In order to come back to the surface the rescuers had to drill a hole with precaution so that things wouldnt get any worse. The article is news worthy because it tells about the end of an accident that has been on the news for a long time. The lead of the article is a what lead which is the drill reached the trapped miners. Since the accident occured two months ago it was important for the article two summarize everything that happened between then and now. The main focus of the article was to detail the complications and risks that the rescue has. Since the article was done by two people, one writer in Chile and another in New York, the sources include the family members of the trapped miners and the people in charge of the mine. These sources are good because they are the ones directly related and involved but the article would have been better if they had as a source NASA officials especially since they played an important role in the rescue. NASA provided their own advice to build the capsule that will transport the miners back up to the surface. The article did a good job in describing the rescue process and the technology. Basically they provided the how for the what. I chose this article because I am familiar with the news about the Chilean miners and I thought that since it was about the actual and final steps to the rescue, it was important.

Marijuana brings families closer: one day at a time

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/10/us/10pot.html?ref=health

“Marijuana, Once Divisive, Brings Some Families Closer”

By: John Leland

New York Times

This headline is unique because normally the use of drugs in families tear them apart, but in this case the headline states that families are becoming closer due to the consumption of marijuana. This headline lets me know that the article will be based on a positive aspect of this drug which is illegal in some states. The lead draws the readers in by hinting that children “buying marijuana for aging parents”, which is peculiar because most parents would not want their children buying drugs. The lead is a what lead because right off the bat I knew what I would be reading about, it is very effective because even though I knew what the article was about I wanted to know more about why kids are buying marijuana for their parents.

This article had many sources. Some of the sources’ full names were not included due to legal reasons. Bryan 46 buys marijuana for his mother and father, Alex 21 studies the different uses of marijuana in college and also provides his father with the drug. As well as Florence 89 a New York artist who gets her dose from her daughter Loren 65 who has admitted to all of her doctors that she uses marijuana and they have not discouraged her from using it. The opinions of professionals were also part of the article, Dr. Seddon R. Savage, a pain specialist and president of the American Pain Society, Dan G. Blazer, a professor of geriatric psychology at Duke University. I think this article balanced out very well the opinions of the parents using the substances and their children who provided them. I do think the author should have included the voice of an authority who says what could happen to these elderly people who are using marijuana illegal.

This article has several news determinants, such as consequence and human interest. This article speaks of marijuana a drug which has been used illegally for many decades by young people, is legal in 14 states and Washington D.C, but is being used by many elderly people in states such as Illinois and New York where it’s illegally.

I was drawn to this article because many people are against marijuana pushing aside the fact that it can be used as a medicine.

Bloomberg's Double Standard

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/09/nyregion/09stamps.html?ref=nyregion

Mayor’s Soda Plan and His Company Policy Differ

New York Times

Anemona Hartocollis

This article is about the snack policy that is in place at Mayor Bloomberg Company; Bloomberg L.P. Bloomberg has been trying to put in a place a ban that wouldn’t allow food stamp users to purchase sugary drinks with their food stamps. In the offices of Bloomberg L.P. on the sixth floor there is a pantry that is full of free healthy snacks but they also offer free Pepsi, Coke, orange Fanta, ginger ale and Mountain Dew.

The headline caught my attention because lately I have been hearing in the news that Mayor Bloomberg wants to ban food stamp users from purchasing sugary drinks with the money they receive. The story uses a “what” lead and I don’t think it’s very effective because it doesn’t really catch the reader’s attention. The sources used in the article were a Bloomberg employee that wanted to remain anonymous and Bloomberg spokesperson Mr. Loeser. To enrich the article there should have been more quotes from people who are on food stamps and how they feel about the policy at Bloomberg’s company being hypocritical to what he’s trying to do as Major of New York City.

The story could have also used more facts on the ban Bloomberg is trying to put into place and some statistics on how sugary drinks are affecting the obesity rates in New York City. This would have helped inform the reader even more and give them an idea of how serious it is that Bloomberg is trying to implement this policy when his own company is the total opposite.

The news determinant used in this story is human interest and consequence. This is a human interest story because many people are going to be interested in the ban and the policy Bloomberg Company has. It is also a consequence story because there will be many people affected who are on food stamps affected by the ban of buying sugary drinks.

Overall it was a very good story because it showed that there is a double standard with the policies that are being made by Bloomberg.

IPhone goes to Verizon

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/09/technology/09phone.html?ref=technology

Apple Plans to Offer iPhone on Verizon
By: Miguel Helft

This article is about how Apple plans to merge with Verizon in order to better compete with the Android company. People who have no access to the IPhone because it is not a part of their phone company are buying the Android phone instead, as the next best thing. For this reason, the Android is starting to outsell the IPhone. Apple plans to sell their Verizon version of the IPhone 4 early next year, which will hopefully bring up their sells.

This article uses a why lead. It starts off talking about why Apple plans on offering their IPhone to the Verizon company. I think the headline of the story is good. It grabbed my attention so I know it would get the attention of people who actually do have Apple products unlike my self. The sources of the story are people who work for the company and people who work close with the Apple company. Although these sources are good, I think they could have included more people who work for Apple, and some people who worked for Verizon. these sources would have been able to provide more information about the company merge. I also think the article should have included quotes from the people who are on Verizon, so we could see how they finally feel to have access to the popular IPhone. This article uses the news determinate of human interest. it is about a IPhone, which is very popular to people who are interested in technology.

I chose to write about this article because the headline caught my attention. I also thought a lot of people who have Verizon would be interested in knowing this. I also wanted to write about something new and less serious.

News Friday 10/8/10

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/09/arts/music/09lennon.html?_r=1&ref=music

"Long After Death, Lennon Remains and Inspiration." by Allan Kozinn. New York Times.

I think the headline was good because it summarized the main idea of the article, and it shows how John Lennon still has an influence on people, even though he died thirty years ago. The lead of the story was a what lead because it describes what is happening on the day of John Lennon's 70th birthday. The lead tells the reader what events have been planned in commemoration of John Lennon's birthday. Te lead works well with the story because it emphasizes the main point of the story. The main point of the story is to show how people still remember John Lennon and are influenced by him. By telling the reader about all the events planned in commemoration to Lennon's birthday, the author is showing the influece of John Lennon on people. The author is also showing that people have not forgotten about John Lennon, despite the fact that Lennon has long been dead.
The author does not use any people as sources. The only sources used are comments in documentaries about John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I think that the author should have definately used regular Lennon fans as sources. Since the article was mainly about how John Lennon is still remembered until this day, the author should have included quotes from Lennon fans who can show the readers that John Lennon's legacy continues to live. I also think that the author should have also included more information about Lennon's influence on people today and during the 60s and 70s. That way, the author could have compared Lennon's influence on people when he was alive to when he was dead.
The news determinants that went into play for this article were timeliness and prominence. Timeliness was a news determinant because the article was posted on the same day of John Lennon's birthday. Since John Lennon is well-known, a story written about him on his birthday would attract readers more and the story would be more advertised than a story written about him on a regular day where people may not remember of John Lennon. Prominence is also a news determinant because John Lennon is very well-known, especially in New York City, since NYC was his home for a long time. People today can walk into a souvenir store in Manhattan and find something related to the Beatles or John Lennon and New York. Even walking in central park, can one be reminded of John Lennon, e.g., the John Lennon "Imagine" memorial and the people in the stands selling pictures of New York, some of which depict John Lennon.
The reason that I chose this article is because I am a Beatles/ John Lennon fan. Knowing that today was John Lennon's birthday, I decided to see if I found a story on John Lennon.

Suicides Put Light on Pressures of Gay Teenagers

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/us/04suicide.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=gay%20teens%20in%20california&st=cse

New Yotk Times

By Jesse McKinley

Published: October 3, 2010

Many gay teens are kiling themelves because of bulling from other teens. Their classmates torture them and because of the stress, they take their own lives. A young teen Seth Walsh hang himself because his classmates made him of him and taunted him everyday. After being on life support for a week, he died at the age pf thirteen. A student at Rutgers University jumped off the George Washington Bridge because he saw a video of himself and another man on the internet. Two weeks later afer Tyler Clementi killed himelf, another teen Astor Brown shot after being harrassed by his classmates. His parents blamed the police department after complaining and nothing was done. The exeutive director of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network speaks how the pressure can be intense if you are in a small community. A blogger name Dan Savage who is a sex columnist, blames teachers and administration for the problem of gay teens being harrassed by their peers.

This is serious because people have the right to their own sexual prefernce. A man or a woman can be with whom ever they want. It i no ones business and I believe that these teen who taunt them should be replemanded. It is also serious because there are many people in our school who are bisexual and gay, if these people get teased then someone would have to be done about it. The headline of the story wa interesting since there has always been trouble socially and politically with gay people. The lead of the article was alright it wasn't nothing too catchy.

My news friday

Jesus Diaz

Income and satisfaction
Motoko Rich

As of last year the ideal pay for a worker was 75,000 in order for the average American to live happy but according to the Macarthur foundation and David Card this as like a lot of things in America has changed. According to Card and the Macarthur foundation it now all depends on who you work with and how much they make. In a recent study conducted by Card which interviewed staff from the University of California and listed their salaries and when the same chart was brought to another random campus it was shown that staff members were suddenly disgruntle about their paid salaries despite that they were just happy with their own salary. This just shows that employees do not like being under paid compared to their colleagues.
The title is appropriate and tells what the article is about in a quick comparison of the both. The lead is a “What” lead and gets a good lead because it gets straight to the main topic so the reader will automatically get a gist what the story is about directly. This story has many sources for example the people who conducted that conducted the study which were David Card, Alexandre Mas, Enrico Moretti and Emmanuel Saez but though this story has many sources I still think they should’ve added a actual staff as a source which would’ve made the source stronger. I think this story is missing a catch because despite the story is good I feel it’s to short and could’ve been elaborated on it more because I feel they just stated the fact instead of grabbing the reader’s attention with a lengthy story.

Imagining a deficit plan from republicans
By David Leonard

In an effort to “save America” republicans have once again made the possibility of a specific tax cut and higher spending cuts. The republicans have discussed that the federal government is no longer self sufficient and in order to save our national security and economic future we must raise taxes. The reality is this even with these steps the deficit is far from over by the year 2035 America should have plummeted 1.9 trillion. The irony in this is that the three major organizations that are eating up the economy which is Medicare, military and social security are the ones exempt from the cuts. Also we can’t afford to be a self sufficient country no more but President Obama recently established a new health bill.
As far as the title goes I feel it correlates to the story very well because it is short and sweet and gets straight to the point. It sums up the main idea. The lead is a “What” lead and was written to where as the writer got straight to the point and explained what the article was about. There were many sources used in this article to make it a strong story for example the article included Paul Ryan a republican on the housing committee and also Marco Rubio the senate candidate in Florida. Despite the fact that the story had many sources I felt that the writer could’ve got a democrats point of also to create a less bias feeling of the story seeing that all the opinions were from a republican. A thing that could’ve been added to have made the story stronger was a graphical deficit chart to go along with the statements about our economy to make reality of the story more serious.

Some of you need to make corrections to your News Friday assignments. In the blog title section, you should put your title -- NOT the URL to the article or the article's title.

Make sure you are answering the questions for the assignment. If you forget, look under the Journalism tab and review them. Please fix your errors so you don't lose points.

Also, you may only select articles from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, or The Washington Post. If you did one from another news outlet, redo it.

Wall Street Journal Mentors

This year, each of you will be working with a mentor from The Wall Street Journal.

You need to make the first contact with your mentor. Type up a letter introducing yourself. Mention what your job is on the paper, what you plan to do next year (if you're a senior), what interest you have in journalism, and any other interesting thing you think a professional would need to know about you. You might also ask them how they got started in journalism, where they went to college and what they do at the WSJ.

Verizon Customers are Being Reimbursed!

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/technology/04webphone.html?_r=1&hp

"Verizon Wireless to Pay Up to $90 Million in Refunds" Edward. Wyatt

I find the headline of this story to be very intriguing and eye catching simply because you don't usually see phone companies returning money to customers because they made a mistake. That is very unusual and rare that you see something like this occurring. This headline works with the story because it sets a very hyperactive mood. It gives the reader the impression that the highlight of the story will be a good one. The lead was an WHO lead. It was very informative and states exactly who will be receiving the $90 million dollars. This lead was effective because it told the readers exactly what was taking place in the very first sentence. It went straight to the point and kept the readers interested, leaving them wanting to read more. the only sources that i saw in the article was the Verizon Wireless Company, Mary Coyne a deputy general counsel for Verizon Wireless, and the Federal Communications Commission. This article could have used some more sources such as some customers who were wrongfully charged by the Verizon Company. This would make the story much more interesting as opposed to just plainly stating what happened and that's it. The readers would like to know what were some of the specific complaints made. This article could also use more information. It seems to me as though the article was very vague and boring. The article started off very interesting but as i continued to read I lost interest in the story very quickly. I think the article could have used more "interesting facts" to spice up the story. I think this article is newsworthy because everyone has a cellphone nowadays and since Verizon Wireless is one of the top phone companies, this article would pertain to those customers. Things like this always occurs, when a customer is being overcharged for something they don't use but this time the customers are being heard.

I chose to write about this article because most of my family is a Verizon Wireless customer and they're always having some dispute with the Verizon Network because they are being overcharged. We always report the problem but Verizon never gets back to us and we ending up paying additional fees for features we never used.

U.S. Issues Alert for Europe, Cites Terror Threat

By Mark Drajem

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/03/AR2010100302115.html?hpid=topnews

When I read the headline I immediately thought about a terror attack occuring and that's what grasped my attention. The headline associates with the story because it is putting an alert out for a terror attack in europe but also saying how others may be effected due to connections. The lead was a when lead and the author used the fact that an alert was issued to gain the attention of the readers. A source in this story was The State Departments Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy. This source was used as an in source who can verify threats and movements. I think a they should have said how serious the treat is and to what measures should we prepare. This is news worthy because it is for the protection of the people.

I feel like the U.S should really step up protection from terrorist activity. They can even try to find out what terrorist actually want. They have to want something or do they really want to just keep killing themselves for what they believe in? I also feel that the U.S government knows more then what their telling the citizens and that's why they send out little warning so that citizens can at least be aware.

"Mexicans Propose to Reform Newtons Law" http://espanol.news.yahoo.com/s/30092010/103/tecnologia-mexicanos-proponen-reformular-ley-newton.html

This article is in spanish but is still news below is my writing and following is my tranlation.

I believe this story is news worthy even though it is not directly published in our country because Newton's Laws of Gravity are still important to us especially for people studying physics. The lead of the article is not at all passive because it starts off by saying proposed. The article is about a group of astrophysicists challenging Newton's Laws based on their own experiments and research. It is not as if a group of people met to randomly contradict an inportant subjec. This topic is very delicate because the reporters writing this story must be sure of what they are writing or they can send the wrong message to its readers especially because the subject is a worldly accepted scientific theory. The article has no written author because it is a news agency which could mean that the paper collects stories from other journalists. The fact that it doesnt name the author is harmful to the credibility to the article because the readers may not want to take into consideration the truthfulness or it. The article is overall news worthy because it deals with a topic that affects the entire world and doesn't only spotlight the investigators but instead they spotlight he importance.

Mexico, F.D. , September 30, 2010 (EL Universal) - "The mexican astrophysicists Sergio Mendoza and Xavier Hernandez proposed to reform Newton's Universal Law of Gravity for the new Extended Gravity.

The new position taken by the investigators of the Institute of Astronomy at the UNAM explains a series of inconsistencies between the observed phenomenon at distant galaxies and the predicted behavior by the classic theory.

This new formulation published in the magazines Astronomy & Astrophysics and in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society offers a new expression for the force of gravity, resulting indistinguishable from Newton's Law as it relates to the solar System but at galactic levels declines much slower than indicated by the English physicist.

The mexicans make an example of the spiral galaxies which rotate faster than expected, so much that the stars and gases that compose them should be released when spining like a water spout.

However the force that keeps them united compensates the centrifugal originated by the rotating movement.

The dominant models to explain this discrepency consist of postulating that there is more matter than is observed, the so called dark matter whose gravitational force should keep the galaxy united.

But should posses exotic properties such as not absorbing light or releasing it, traspassing ordinary matter, occupying great extensions of space without becoming bulky and composing 90% of the universe's matter.

They explore the alternate path The Universal Law of Gravity proposed by Newton in 1687 in his book Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, which establishes a quantitative relationship for the force of attraction between two objects of mass.

It sustains that all objects in the universe possesing mass have a gravitational attraction over any other object with mass even if they are separated by great distances as it occurs with binary stars which are associated but still far apart from each other.

Mendoza and Hernandez have explored an alternate path that discards the existance of dark matter.

They infer that the attractive force produced by the observed matter at distant galaxies is greater than it is supposed to be.

This approach recommended by Newton himself: find the forces that control the movement of the astros instead of postulating exotic substance.

Which can be found in the preface of the second edition of his book.

The scientists also present comparable proof across all astronomical scales with results in the best measurements of margin of error made until today including those of the position and movement of the Solar System which have a fractional precision of upto a part of a billion.

Likewise they present verfiable predictions for actual problems.

This result replaces the vision of the cosmos for the last thirty years since Fritz Zwicky and Vera Rubin proposed the existence of dark matter.

The Extended Gravity opens new areas of investigation such as searching for its realistic version, review the consequences of space and its expansion, and find an answer to the problem of dark matter.

For more than thirty years investigative groups unsatisfied with the theory of dark matter, have worked on alternative gravitational models.

Part of them have followed the Modified Dinamic Models by Mordehai Milgrom of 1981 who placed a change in Newton's Second Law (describes the dinamic of a massive object accelerated by the action of a force) for those systems that suffered minor accelerations bit the Modified Dinamic Models hace resulted to be difficult to apply.

Hernandez and Mendoaza alongside their team composed of the postdoctoral investigator Juan Carlos Hidalgo and the Ph.D. and masters students,Tula Bernal and Teresita Suarez, have proposed an alternative equivalent to Modified Dinamic Models through developing Newton's powers of gravitational forces known as F= GMm/r2.

The Extended Gravity details the force felt by objects at astronomical distances.

It coincides with the proposed description by Newton for the Solar System and those of the Modified Dinamic Models for galactic systems.

Besides it finalizes the force felt by intermediate systems like eliptic galaxies."

California Reduces Its Penalty for Marijuana

The New York Times

Jesse McKinley

This article is about the decision the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has made to reduce the penalty for someone who is found with an ounce or less of marijuana. The bill states that having up to an ounce of marijuana is liable to a fine of $100 and offenders wouldn’t be arrested or run the risk of having a criminal record. Schwarzenegger defended passing this bill by stating that normally being charged with possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor which requires the defendant to have a jury trial and because of budget cuts many court officials can’t spend limited resources trying to prosecute a crime that has the same punishment as a traffic ticket.

The headline of this story grabbed my attention because it makes the reader think that marijuana is on its way to becoming legalized in California and maybe that will soon start happening in other states around the country. The lead of the story is very short and to point because it tells the reader that now getting caught with marijuana in California doesn’t have a harsh punishment as before. The sources made this story because they included the Governor himself and the California state director for the Drug Policy Alliances, other sources that could have been used are member of the police force to see how they feel this new law will affect the streets of California and citizens of California to see how they feel about the new law that has been put into place. This article could have used some statistics on the percentage of people who are arrested with possession of marijuana up to one ounce and how long it takes to prosecute these crimes to show readers how big of an impact this new law would have on the state of California. This story uses human interest because a lot of people are interested in knowing whether this new law may start popping up in different states.

I chose this article because I found it very interesting that slowly but surely possession of marijuana is becoming less and less of an infraction in the legal system. It was interesting to see that this new law was passed in California and the possibility of a law like this passing in another state seems a little higher now. As a teenager in our modern day society where marijuana is a very acceptable drug it was interesting to imagine how a bill like this is going to affect the people of California and the United States as a whole.
