I think the headline was good because it summarized the main idea of the article, and it shows how John Lennon still has an influence on people, even though he died thirty years ago. The lead of the story was a what lead because it describes what is happening on the day of John Lennon's 70th birthday. The lead tells the reader what events have been planned in commemoration of John Lennon's birthday. Te lead works well with the story because it emphasizes the main point of the story. The main point of the story is to show how people still remember John Lennon and are influenced by him. By telling the reader about all the events planned in commemoration to Lennon's birthday, the author is showing the influece of John Lennon on people. The author is also showing that people have not forgotten about John Lennon, despite the fact that Lennon has long been dead.
The author does not use any people as sources. The only sources used are comments in documentaries about John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I think that the author should have definately used regular Lennon fans as sources. Since the article was mainly about how John Lennon is still remembered until this day, the author should have included quotes from Lennon fans who can show the readers that John Lennon's legacy continues to live. I also think that the author should have also included more information about Lennon's influence on people today and during the 60s and 70s. That way, the author could have compared Lennon's influence on people when he was alive to when he was dead.
The news determinants that went into play for this article were timeliness and prominence. Timeliness was a news determinant because the article was posted on the same day of John Lennon's birthday. Since John Lennon is well-known, a story written about him on his birthday would attract readers more and the story would be more advertised than a story written about him on a regular day where people may not remember of John Lennon. Prominence is also a news determinant because John Lennon is very well-known, especially in New York City, since NYC was his home for a long time. People today can walk into a souvenir store in Manhattan and find something related to the Beatles or John Lennon and New York. Even walking in central park, can one be reminded of John Lennon, e.g., the John Lennon "Imagine" memorial and the people in the stands selling pictures of New York, some of which depict John Lennon.
The reason that I chose this article is because I am a Beatles/ John Lennon fan. Knowing that today was John Lennon's birthday, I decided to see if I found a story on John Lennon.

Many gay teens are kiling themelves because of bulling from other teens. Their classmates torture them and because of the stress, they take their own lives. A young teen Seth Walsh hang himself because his classmates made him of him and taunted him everyday. After being on life support for a week, he died at the age pf thirteen. A student at Rutgers University jumped off the George Washington Bridge because he saw a video of himself and another man on the internet. Two weeks later afer Tyler Clementi killed himelf, another teen Astor Brown shot after being harrassed by his classmates. His parents blamed the police department after complaining and nothing was done. The exeutive director of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network speaks how the pressure can be intense if you are in a small community. A blogger name Dan Savage who is a sex columnist, blames teachers and administration for the problem of gay teens being harrassed by their peers.
This is serious because people have the right to their own sexual prefernce. A man or a woman can be with whom ever they want. It i no ones business and I believe that these teen who taunt them should be replemanded. It is also serious because there are many people in our school who are bisexual and gay, if these people get teased then someone would have to be done about it. The headline of the story wa interesting since there has always been trouble socially and politically with gay people. The lead of the article was alright it wasn't nothing too catchy.

As of last year the ideal pay for a worker was 75,000 in order for the average American to live happy but according to the Macarthur foundation and David Card this as like a lot of things in America has changed. According to Card and the Macarthur foundation it now all depends on who you work with and how much they make. In a recent study conducted by Card which interviewed staff from the University of California and listed their salaries and when the same chart was brought to another random campus it was shown that staff members were suddenly disgruntle about their paid salaries despite that they were just happy with their own salary. This just shows that employees do not like being under paid compared to their colleagues.
The title is appropriate and tells what the article is about in a quick comparison of the both. The lead is a “What” lead and gets a good lead because it gets straight to the main topic so the reader will automatically get a gist what the story is about directly. This story has many sources for example the people who conducted that conducted the study which were David Card, Alexandre Mas, Enrico Moretti and Emmanuel Saez but though this story has many sources I still think they should’ve added a actual staff as a source which would’ve made the source stronger. I think this story is missing a catch because despite the story is good I feel it’s to short and could’ve been elaborated on it more because I feel they just stated the fact instead of grabbing the reader’s attention with a lengthy story.

Imagining a deficit plan from republicans

In an effort to “save America” republicans have once again made the possibility of a specific tax cut and higher spending cuts. The republicans have discussed that the federal government is no longer self sufficient and in order to save our national security and economic future we must raise taxes. The reality is this even with these steps the deficit is far from over by the year 2035 America should have plummeted 1.9 trillion. The irony in this is that the three major organizations that are eating up the economy which is Medicare, military and social security are the ones exempt from the cuts. Also we can’t afford to be a self sufficient country no more but President Obama recently established a new health bill.
As far as the title goes I feel it correlates to the story very well because it is short and sweet and gets straight to the point. It sums up the main idea. The lead is a “What” lead and was written to where as the writer got straight to the point and explained what the article was about. There were many sources used in this article to make it a strong story for example the article included Paul Ryan a republican on the housing committee and also Marco Rubio the senate candidate in Florida. Despite the fact that the story had many sources I felt that the writer could’ve got a democrats point of also to create a less bias feeling of the story seeing that all the opinions were from a republican. A thing that could’ve been added to have made the story stronger was a graphical deficit chart to go along with the statements about our economy to make reality of the story more serious.

Mention what your job is on the paper, what you plan to do next year (if you're a senior), what interest you have in journalism, and any other interesting thing you think a professional would need to know about you. You might also ask them how they got started in journalism, where they went to college and what they do at the WSJ.
Once you have typed your letter, print it and show it to me. Once I approve your letter, you may e-mail it to your mentor. Remember that you are writing to a professional writer, so watch your grammar and mechanics. This is not a time to write as if you were sending a text.
If the e-mail bounces back or you do not hear from your mentor by the end of the week, please let me know. The more you put into this, more you get out of it.
