“Bedbugs Finding a Way into New York’s Schools” Geoffrey Decker. New York Times.
The article talks about the increase in bedbugs found in school. As years pass, more and more schools call 311 notifying them that there is a bedbug infestation in the school. I think the headline is effective because it candidly tells readers that New York schools have been found to have bedbugs. The lead was written to show readers that bedbugs are in public schools. The lead is straight to the point.
The sources used in the article are the teacher and principle of a bedbug infested school. Also, the article includes information from New York City’s 311 help line. I think that other statistics could have been used or information obtained from students who have actually seen bedbugs in schools. These pieces of information would help the writer better support his claim of bedbug infested schools. This information would also help people see that bedbugs are a growing problem in New York.
The news determinant that makes this article newsworthy is consequence. The article presents a problem found in New York City public schools that will affect students from schools in places like Brooklyn or Queens. It is the readers’ decision whether they choose to do something about the bedbug infestation in schools.
The reason that I selected this article is because the headline caught my attention. I am constantly hearing in the news that the number of bedbugs have increased. I also hear other people talking about how bedbugs are found in other places, such as movie theaters. As I read the article, I thought of how much of a problem bedbugs can become if people don’t do anything to get rid of them. New York City is a busy city; because of this, bedbugs can easily spread.
Interesting article, Diana. I wonder if this could be something our paper could do too. Have their been any cases of bed bugs in our building? I would bet most students don't even know what bed bugs are!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting story especially after the bed buds incident at AMC movie theaters. I think the article you decided to write about is very interesting because bedbugs have become such a hassle for New Yorkers. I agree with you Diana that maybe the article should include more statistics because that way us the readers can feel the impact of how big the problem of bedbugs really are. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice with this article Diana. I think we have all been scared with this Bed Bug epidemic since they have been pretty much every where. So good job at picking a story about something that can have a possible affect on everyone of us.
